Species choice for antibody production
Rabbit
New Zealand white rabbits are the most commonly used species for polyclonal antibody production since they offer the best comprise in terms of cost and amount of antibody available.
Chicken
Egg yolk polyclonal antibodies account for a very interesting alternative to rabbit polyclonal antibodies. Not only it allows to obtain 5 to 10 times more antibody than rabbits, but also they are especially interesting for the phylogenetic distance to human, murine and more generally mammalian proteins. This type of antibodies usually generates less background than rabbit polyclonal antibodies when used in applications involving mammals and sometimes allows to get higher titres than with a mammalian species.
Guinea pig
The Guinea Pig is a very sensitive animal. He must be handled with care and it is generally necessary to inject weak antigen doses. However, immune response is usually raised quickly and strongly.
Goat
The Goat is an interesting host to develop polyclonal antibodies when a large amount of serum is required.
Rat, mouse and Chinese hamster
These small animal usually offer low amounts of antibodies even though they have strong immune responses. They are good alternative when several anti by species are needed for multiple simultaneous staining.
